About Us


The CAPHLD is a network of over thirty local public health laboratories that perform state-of-art testing to detect outbreaks of foodborne, respiratory, and rash illness, to determine new trends in communicable disease, conducts timely diagnostic testing to detect and characterize influenza virus, tuberculosis and other agents, responds to a variety of public health emergencies including bioterrorism threats, environmental spills, rabies infection in domestic and wild animals, and conducts testing drinking, ocean, lake and stream and waste water to ensure protection of the public.

Mission and Purpose


The mission of the California Association of Public Health Laboratory Directors is to imporve and protect public health through the promotion and advancement of public health laboratory practice.


The primary purpose of this corporation shall be to promote and improve public health laboratory practices by: 


    • Advising the California State Department of Health Services, the California Conferernce of Local Health Officers, elected officials and others, as appropriate, on public health laboratory matters.
    • Coordinate public health laboratory activities in Calfornia.
    • Promote research and development to improve laboratory practices.
    • Publish and disseminate information relating to laboratory practice.
    • Sponsor training workshops and conferences on public health laboratory subjects.
